Know Don from: Auxlang mailing list

Comments: I was really saddened to hear of his passing. I really enjoyed reading Don's posts on the auxland list. Although we didn't always agree on everything, I always found him to be an interesting and challenging friend and debater. It's too bad that he didn't live long enough to see the more general acceptance of an international auxiliary language, and I hope that our dream will come true someday.

Name: Joyce Granville
Location: Pittsburg, CA

Know Don from: I worked with Don at the Election Dept. in Martinez, CA during the 2002 & 2004 Elections

Comments: Don was delightful to work with. Everyone liked him. We were seasonal clerks at the election Dept and Don and his wife worked there for a brief time. Don always knew the answers to questions we had about the election procedure. I mentioned my husbands parents in England had wanted to learn Esoeranto, but they didn't pursue it. I was facinated hearing Don call his wife on the phone from work and speak Esperanto. It was a lyrical sound and he sounded so natural. When I heard Don was ill I would occassionally email him. He always wrote back. All of us at the Election Dept sent Don a thinking of you card in early January with a giraffe on it, and we all signed it. I will relay his passing to all my co-workers. My heart goes out to Dons family. Take care, Sincerely,
Joyce Granville

Know Don from: Fandom, the Mythopoeic Society, the SCA, and a curious synergy of life, so that I keep meeting people who knew Don, or whom Don has influenced, profoundly and positively, in some way.

Comments: I've been far, far out of the loop. The news has just reached me. I am grabbing for words -- no, they elude me. Words may come later. For now, let me express my condolences and sorrow to Angie and the Harlow family, and the wide skein of friends and associates affected by this loss.

Know Don from: Esperanto movement (Internet only)

Comments: Back in 1999 when I first became interested in Esperanto, Don was instrumental in helping me learn the fundamentals of the language. Despite not knowing me from Adam, he was always quick to help and had a knack for explaining things well. I will remember him as a kind teacher who helped spark my enthusiasm en Esperanto. I often found myself reading his blog entries and terrific website. He will be missed, and his legacy is an inspiration to us all.

To Don's family and close friends, I send my warmest condolences.

Comments: I knew Don when we were both 13. We caddied at the golf course in Lake Oswego. As you know, he was the brightest person any of us have ever known. I was really happy to see that he found Angela and had a good life. He never really got me interested in Esperanto, but he was working on it even in high school.

Name: Michael
Location: Boston

Know Don from: On line only.

Comments: Although I never met Mr. Harlow in person, I wanted to let his family know that, even from my "contacts" with him in cyberspace, I knew that he was a wonderful person with a powerful intellect and a kind heart.

I read his "Esperanto Book" with enormous interest and gratefully sampled the riches of Esperanto literature he made available through his work. He also took the time to help me resolve a problem with UEA during its recent time of troubles, and generously provided me with pointers when I sought advice for a project I was working on.

I send you my sincere condolences. His family and friends will doubtless miss him the most; but there are many others who will long feel his absence.

Know Don from: His incisive and instructive writings.

Comments: It's hard to imagine that you can miss someone you've never met or even communicated with, but Don's writings have been an inspiration to me in learning Esperanto. His writings on Esperanto both instructed and entertained. Warm thoughts to his family upon their loss. I don't know what language they speak in the hereafter, but I won't be surprised if suddenly a lot of angels are wearing green flag pins!

Name: Albert Reiner
Location: Vienna, Austria

Know Don from: I never met him and just know him superficially from a few e-mails.

Comments: Not long after starting to finally learn Esperanto, I came across Don's collection of on-line literature, which proved immensely valuable for myself as, I am sure, for many others. At one point I mentioned to him a way that would make the site more easily navigable for users of text-based browsers, and he changed things at once; at other times, I sent him a few corrections for "misskanajhoj", and he always reacted in a very kind way. - Apart from that, our ways also crossed in various mailing lists.

Obviously, this is a huge loss for those interested in Esperanto, and even more obviously for the family. My heartfelt condolences!

Li laboris pacience, konstrue, kundivide. Kion ni farus sen lia pagxaro?

Know Don from: Partopreno en / deĵorado ĉe ELNA.

Ho, vintra vento!

Know Don from: I've known Don since I first learned Esperanto, seeing him from time to time at local Esperanto meetings and conferences.

Mi konas Don ekde mia esperantistigxo, cxe lokaj kunvenoj kaj kongresoj.

Comments: Don has been an impressive example of how one person can make a difference. I knew him as an eloquent authority on the language, a pillar in the Esperanto community, and a thoughtful man with a wonderful wry sense of humor. My last memory of his kindness is from the national Esperanto conference last summer, when he and Angela kindly let this exhausted mom and her 5-yr-old nap in their hotel room. I woke up to find him peacefully reading a book beside us in the room. Anjo, Sybil and other loved ones, I'm so sorry for your loss. May Don find peace and joy in the next phase of life.

Know Don from: Esperanto

Comments: Although I had corresponded with Don Harlow occasionally for 20 years about Esperanto, I met him only a couple of years ago. I first encountered Don reading his thoughtful and respectful replies to public misinformation about Esperanto. I was in California for a conference and wanted to attend a local Esperanto meeting. He picked me up at the train station, gave me a tour of the "Centra Oficejo", and took me to the Esperanto meeting in Golden Gate Park. Unassuming, gracious, and warm, I will miss him tremendously.

Chi tiu gastlibro pruvas, ke liaj grandskalaj interrilatoj kuraghigis multajn homojn kaj plirichigis iliajn vivojn.
